Buckingham Properties presents the 2016 Movies with a Downtown View, starts this Friday, July 22nd at the MLK Jr. Memorial Park, our second movie will be Friday, August 19th. Produced by The Little Theatre, the Rochesteriat, and the WSPNA, this is our third year operating and the word has been getting out because it's popularity has been growing tremendously.
If you've never been, or you're on the fence about going this year, here's 17 Fun Things You'll Want to Know About this Year's MWADV.
1. It's FREE!
Yes, that's right, FREE. Free admission, free snacks, and free raffles to sign up for. FREE, FREE, FREE!
The Producers of the events (the Rochesteriat, The Little Theatre, and the WSPNA) do everything in our power to make these events accessible and enjoyable for the entire community, and we'd like to keep it that way. We have the most AMAZING sponsors that make this possible, and we couldn't ask for a more caring, supportive community.
2. Manhattan Square Park
The MWADV events take place on the lawn of the MLK Jr. Memorial Park, or what was formerly known as Manhattan Square Park (353 Court Street) - or what formerly looked like a lawn - now brown grass due to the full sun and lack of rain. Note: we're not complaining.
While there may not be much left of that green grass, make sure you take a good look around the park and all it has to offer throughout the year - this area holds a skating rink in the winter, a colorful playground, an indoor venue (The Lodge) for parties and gatherings that can be rented out, holds the Tribute to Man structure overhead (the site of Fringe Fest two years ago), and the City has announced it will be turning on the Lawrence Halprin fountains once again come fall - something that hasn't happened in over 25 years.
3. the Skyline
Have you ever looked at the Rochester skyline at night? Maybe you had at one time, but have you seen it lately? It's changed quite a bit in the last few years, so we invite you to take another, closer look. In particular, we suggest you spot Buckingham Properties' Tower280 in the background behind the movie screen - this was not finished or lit up last year at the same time; spot the new lights coming down from the Xerox Building, also owned by BuckProp; and lastly, just imagine what your life would be like in a brand new condo/apartment in The Metropolitan Rochester by Gallina Development.
The skyline is one of the defining features of the MWADV events. There are so many great movie events happening all over Rochester including the Monroe County Movies in the Park, but this event definitely scores big with a view to enjoy behind the Big screen.
4. We will have an Interpreter, Subtitles
We will have an interpreter for the intros and for the raffle prizes, and both movies will be English subtitled.
If there is a specific request for an interpreter for the event, please contact Jason at firstname.lastname@example.org.
5. Frito Lay Snacks
Let's go back to the FREE thing for a moment. Frito Lay has generously sponsored these events since we started, and this year they've given us hundreds of bags of Lays Classic Potato Chips and Doritos to give out to our movie goers - FREE!
Make sure to stop by the Rochesteriat's table to grab a bag for the movie experience.
6. The Sandlot & Perks of Being a Wallflower
July movie - The Sandlot. Need I say more?
August movie - The Perks of Being a Wallflower
7. Beer Garden & Coffee
Will you get thirsty for a tasty beverage during the show? We gotcha covered. Roc Brewing Co. will once again be providing $5 drafts of their delicious beers (ID required, beer garden only), and Glen Edith will keep you caffeinated well into the wee hours so you can make sure to stay hydrated during the movie.
We offer a little something for everyone.
8. Food Trucks
So by the end of the week, the beginning of July's movie, we may have the HOTTEST weather on record for the U.S., how about that? Want to cool off during the movie? Grab an ice cream from the Eat Me cart and enjoy! They'll be back for August 19th as well #score.
10. Be Helpful!
Want to help us out for the evening and volunteer? We'll pay you in raffle tickets - yes, 3 extra raffle tickets to put in for the great local prizes and Jetblue tickets. We only need a few of you, so it's first come, first served. Contact us if you're interested!
11. ESL is sending a Kindness Crew, YELP is the Official Check-In Sponsor
You heard us right, as a partner and neighbor in the neighborhood, we're so excited that ESL has generously accepted to become a Premier Sponsor of the MWADV. Volunteers will be chatting, welcoming, and handing out some gifts to attendees. Stop and make sure you say hi the Crew!
And we already know you'll be there because YELP will be on-hand as the Official Check-In Sponsor of the MWADV! Thank You YELP Rochester!
12. More of Our Rochester Friends & Family Will Be There
Rochester is really a small place to be, and as friends and family, we're all making this city a better place to be. We'll have the AMAZING ROC Parkour, the Rochester Brainery, Upstate Social Sessions, Roc Spot, The Mandy Friend Team, and many more joining us at tables of their own - stop by to say hi!
13. There will be Giveaways!
In addition to the ESL Kindness Crew be on site to welcome movie-goers, we'll also have a bunch of giveaways from local businesses to raffle off. These may include small gift certificates to food trucks, local shops, and local classes as well as the Grand Prize giveaway of 2-Roundtrip tickets on the Official Airline of the Movies with a Downtown View - Jetblue Airways!
Local giveaways will be raffled off at each event prior to the start of the movie. In order to get a raffle ticket, no purchase is required although you will have to agree to give your contact information so we can sign you up on the Rochesteriat email Weekly email list. There will be one Grand Prize drawing for the Jetblue tickets prior to the start of the August movie. All tickets not pulled from the July movie will stay in contention for the prizes at the second movie, including the Grand Prize.
Note: You have to present to win the local prizes, but not present to win the Grand Prize.
14. Bring a Picnic
We think one of the best things about the MWADV is the ability to bring your own blanket, chair (please sit towards the back so everyone can see the movie), food and drink. Just enjoy the evening with family, friends, and fellow urban-loving neighbors - and just a sliver of what our city has to offer.
15. Buy/Sponsor a Poster....or 2!
Want to boost your chances of winning those great giveaways? We'll help you if you help us. For $10, you can buy or sponsor the beautiful posters that were made by Tony Zanni of Type High Letterpress. For each poster sponsored (or purchased), we'll give you 3 additional raffle tickets. This is in addition to the one free raffle just for signing up on our Weekly email list.
You can donate the $10 at each movie event, cash only at the events. If you would like to pay by credit card, click here.
16. Get a Show, or Two
Let's face it, it's downtown Rochester and you never know what you're gonna get. But that's the fun of it.
Last year, there was a lightning storm over Lake Ontario that provided yet another beautiful backdrop to the movie. And unless it's drowning out the entire park, we're on as there's no cancellation dates set.
17. It's FRIDAY!
Sure it's summer, but what does that really mean when you have to work like any other time of the year? That's why we pick Fridays for these events. It's going into the weekend, and like Rebecca Black crooned, I "gotta get down on Friday!"
On an unrelated note, we do not reimburse for mental health counseling for getting nasally songs out of your head.
We invite EVERYONE to come and hang out with us this Friday night, July 22nd to watch The Sandlot or the 19th for The Perks of Being a Wallflower! Stop over to the Rochesteriat's table to say hi to us, sign up for FREE raffles, buy more if you'd like to increase your chances of winning, grab some FREE snacks, and enjoy this beautiful time in downtown Rochester!
We hope to see you there!
