Leaf Pick Up Schedule

leaf-pick-up.jpg

Ready for the leaves to drop? It’s that time of year again. Well, we know it’s going to happen sooner or later, and the City of Rochester has us covered when it comes to its 2018 Fall Leaf Pick Up Schedule.

Looking to see when your neighborhood, or even better yet, your street is on for Pick Up? Check out the City’s website here and you’ll be able to put in your address for an even closer look.

leaf-pickup.png

As always, if you have questions about the 2018 Loose Leaf Collection process, feel free to give 311 a call or you can reference the Loose Leaf Collection FAQs page.

Lastly, if you don’t have any of your own leaves to rake up this year and DO want to get involved, the Washington Square Park Community Association, C4, and various other downtown neighborhood organizations will be doing a Mini Clean Sweep on Saturday, November 10th. Please join us as we help clean up Manhattan Square Park, now known as MLK Jr. Memorial Park in downtown. More details coming soon on the Rochesteriat.

Are You Ready for Your Next Big Project in the City?

Mt-Hope-Front.jpg

Are you ready for your next BIG project in the city? More directly, let me ask, do you have the pockets deep enough to take this one on?

609 Mt. Hope Avenue is a historic home that sits just outside the north edge of Mt. Hope Cemetery in the South Wedge, one of the city’s most popular - and exciting neighborhoods. Although it’s not listed on Landmark Society’s recently announced 2018 Five to Revive, it certainly should be. With historical ties to the famed Barry Family (as in Ellwanger and Barry Nursery), and in fact sitting adjacent to the Ellwanger Estate that now operates as a Bed & Breakfast, your purchase of this home comes with legal deeded access to the Ellwanger Gardens in perpetuity.

Windows.jpg

Now listed at $420,000, it’s begging for the next Landmark Historian enthusiast to take it on. With over 5,000 sqaure feet of space sitting on nearly an acre of precious city land, this 5 bedroom, 3.5 bath gem was built at the turn of the 20th century and has the signs of aging to prove it.

And sure, most people will be turned off by how much work is needed in this property. But for those who do not let the facade of wear and tear detract them, make no mistake, this property has the potential to, once again, command its rightful place back onto Rochester’s best properties listings.

A few weeks ago, we got a quick peek inside and around the property from listing agent Leah Ferreri, and here’s what we saw:

Mt-Hope-Back.jpg

….the remnants of beautiful landscaping that you can tell is top-notch once well groomed and maintained…

Back-Patio.jpg

…some additions to the original house that have actually made it bigger over the years, a slate roof, original brick facade, and a gorgeous back-corner porch for relaxing.

Mt-Hope-Path.jpg

Looking for that deeded access to the gardens? There are steps (albeit overgrown with weeds now) that lead to the Ellwanger property right from the backyard…

Mt-Hope-Patio.jpg

…and remnants of better times for the property.

Kitchen.jpg

Inside the home is a mix of the old with the new…

IMG_3829.jpg

…but we really liked the wallpaper that still sticks although we’re not sure what relation to the history (if any) it really has.

door-knob.jpg

There are multiple fireplaces in the home (5 or 6, depending on what online listing information you read)…

IMG_3855.jpg

…hardwoods, beautiful windows, an organ (although the one that used to be there has more of an interesting story that Leah can tell)…

IMG_3840.jpg
Blue-room.jpg

There’s plenty of natural light…

Attic.jpg

…and even a fully redone attic with separate kitchen, bath, and bedroom facilities for those looking to do some renting or even have a friend or family member live with you.

So what do you say, do you have what it takes to take this beautiful, historic home on?

The Last MWADV of the Season - Here's What YOU Need to Know

Tonight, Friday September 7th is going to be a magical evening. With great weather in the forecast, clear skies, and the popular The Greatest Showman movie playing, get ready for an exciting evening with hundreds of your fellow neighbors in downtown Rochester. Because this is our first-ever showing in Parcel 5 downtown, we thought we'd give some quick pointers so you can be prepared to enjoy the evening.

1. Find Parcel 5!

 The Rochesteriat

The Rochesteriat

If you know where Tower280 is, the Democrat & Chronicle, Fuego Coffee, the Liberty Pole, or Sibley's, you'll find Parcel 5. This is what you're looking for! Need a map? Use this one: Parcel 5 (285 E. Main Street)

2. Bring your own seating

Parcel 5, to say the least, is mostly a square of gravel, rocks, and dirt. But that won't stop us from enjoying this area right in the heart of downtown tonight. You'll want to be prepared and bring your own seating with possibly a blanket to put the seating on. Get creative - just because the moon is a bunch of dust and rocks, doesn't mean it's any less important or useful to us.

Got a yoga mat, couch cushion, pool floatie or something else that will work? Bring it!

3. Bring a blanket and/or some warm clothing

The good thing is that the storms came through already and cleared the skies. That means the warm weather is behind us now, and we'll be enjoying a cool evening under the stars with 65-ish degree weather. Bring a blanket, hoodie, or whatever else is going to keep you cozy during the movie as it'll be playing from 8p-10pm (estimate).

4. Parking is abundant all around Parcel 5

Midtown-Garage.JPG

There is metered parking that is FREE (after 6pm) on ALL sides of Parcel 5. Plus, our Title Sponsor Buckingham Properties is opening the Midtown Garage (underground parking!) for FREE tonight from 6-11pm. That's over a thousand spaces of FREE parking....need we say more? OK, we'll also have bike racks available...YES, we did say more!

5. FREE Jetblue Terra Blues Chips, Water, Popcorn and Giveaways

 the Rochesteriat

the Rochesteriat

Make sure to stop by the Washington Square Park Community Association, Buckingham Properties, and 88 on Elm tables tonight for some FREE giveaways and sign up for the FREE raffles. Yes, FREE. The Official Airline of the MWADV, Jetblue, will be giving away its signature Terra Blues potato chips (those same ones that you can enjoy on any Jetblue flight!), 88 on Elm will be popping and handing out free popcorn and Buckingham Properties will have complimentary water for attendees.

Make sure to sign up for our FREE raffles tonight at the WSPCA table, because, as always, we'll have local giveaways to great spots like The Little Theatre, Rochester Brainery, ROC Brewing, Upstate Social Sessions and more. And get this - tonight we'll be picking our Grand-Prize winner for 2-Round-Trip tickets on Jetblue anywhere Jetblue flies. Pretty cool, right!?

6. Dine With Us!

Joe-Bean.jpg

In addition to some free snacks, joining us tonight is Eat Me Ice Cream, Joe Bean Coffee Roasters, Ludwig's Center Stage Cafe and Taste the Roc. You'll definitely have plenty of options for dinner and dessert! See you tonight?

Event Details:

Event Start: 6:30pm
Movie Start: 8pm
Facebook Event Page: Movies With a Downtown View: The Greatest Showman
Location: Parcel 5 (285 E. Main Street)

Note! The movie will be captioned and we will have ASL interpreters with us for all announcement and raffle drawings.

Top 8 Reasons to Love Anytime Fitness in Downtown

 The Rochesteriat

The Rochesteriat

Anytime Fitness is now OPEN in downtown Rochester!

In what was occupied by the former Downtown Fitness Center, Anytime Fitness provides access to those of us who wish to make our own workout times when we want - not based on anyone else's schedule. That's right, Anytime Fitness is just like it states, it's open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year - making it truly possible for you to get a good workout ANYTIME!

 The Rochesteriat

The Rochesteriat

You may remember the former space in the Columbus Building at 50 Chestnut Street (owned by DHD Ventures, same building as The Residences at the Columbus Building), but rest assured that it has been transformed into a totally different space - providing an open floor concept, soaked in natural light from those big, beautiful windows, meshed together with all brand-new equipment.

To give you an idea of just how great this new space is, here's our Top 8 Reasons to Love Anytime Fitness in Downtown.

1. Key Fob Access

 the Rochesteriat

the Rochesteriat

One swipe with your new keyfob and you're in. No need for attendants to swipe your badge, card, or picture id. The doors to the building are secured at all times, there are 24/7 security cameras, and the only people you'll see in the space are trainers and members.

2. Brand New Equipment

 the rochesteriat

the rochesteriat

Think you'll be working out on some beat-up equipment that has been in use for 20 years? Not here. All brand-new machines, weights, and accessories will provide you with a solid workout experience.

BONUS: The brand new cardio equipment offers the tech-saavy member the ability to watch Netflix, Hulu, LiveTV,  browse the Internet, and even connect your Bluetooth headphones.

3. Brightly Colored and Open

 the Rochesteriat

the Rochesteriat

Bad lighting and bland colors? Nope, again, not here. In fact, for those of you who remember the drabby DFC space will be surprised with an open-floor concept that includes plenty of natural light from the outside, bright colors to influence your workout, and an openness that keeps us from feeling claustrophobic.

4. The Flow...

 the rochesteriat

the rochesteriat

And while we're on the subject of space, the workout center is situated all on one floor so that you can get all of your cardio, weight training, and stretching done without having to go very far or even between floors.

This makes it a lot easier for those of us to execute a great circuit training program, having the ability to switch up exercises without much rest in between.

5. The Studio

 The Rochesteriat

The Rochesteriat

The Studio is a space for group classes (body sculpt, yoga, zumba, etc)...

 the rochesteriat

...but it can also be utilized by anyone when there are no classes in session (exercise balls, light weights, stretching, jump roping, etc.).

6. The Beliefs are Front and Center

 The Rochesteriat

The Rochesteriat

Because working together on your personal health is what it's all about...

7. ...and Inspirational

 The Rochesteriat

The Rochesteriat

...and there's also a place for YOU to jot down your ideas, thoughts, little victories - and to stay current for news and other information.

8. All the Extras

 the Rochesteriat

In addition to the gym, be on the lookout for all the extras, including:

Private showers and bathrooms - to freshen up, with dignity, after a good workout

Rockbot - download the app to play your own selection of workout music

A Vacation Much Needed...

 the Rochesteriat

the Rochesteriat

Every October, Stefanie and I get to the point of needing a vacation. It also happens to be our anniversary month, so it all works out and we LOVE traveling in the fall. A chance to get away, to see outside of Rochester, to renew our sense of place, pride, and passion for our city, especially by seeing how the rest of the world lives.

This October, Stefanie and I went on a trip across the country - our country. We wanted to drive because we wanted to experience the vastness of the United States in a car and see it firsthand instead of via plane, on TV, or in pictures.

So without further adieu, here's the A Vacation Much Needed in picture form.

After all of our driving explorations and 3867 miles later, we were able to fly home (on JetBlue, of course!) in style - JetBlue's Mint Experience

A view from 36,000ft flying back over what we just drove through. Renting a car and traveling one-way was perfect! We took our time getting to the West Coast and didn't have to drive ALL THE WAY HOME. We definitely recommend it.

Here's to traveling, enjoying our country and then coming back to the place we love and call home - Rochester!
