While Brighton, Pittsford, and surrounding residents duke it out with the Daniele Family about getting (yet another!) grocery store in the prominent corridor between Pittsford Plaza and Brighton Center, the city is fleshing out its new-found public-attention with a grocery anchor in the brand-new College Town district - and it's not a Wegmans either.
Do you remember the old Mt. Hope Wegmans? Growing up in the 19th Ward, this was certainly one of the stores that my parents would shop at quite a bit. Closed in a snap around the holidays of 2003 due to a reported lack of sales and an outdated building (the oldest one in the Wegmans system at the time), there hasn't been much action around this neighborhood in over a decade...at least until now.
Even as long-time residents from the city, we've said many times before that some of the most optimistic of people tend to be from out-of-town or have lived elsewhere before coming back to here. We have this theory that out-of-towners have a sort-of "fresh" perspective on Rochester, they don't get too bogged down with the past struggles, and they certainly can see this area for what it may offer in the not-too distant future. In this theory, a city takes on the collective personality of its residents - many times the negativity has won out after the community has failed time and time again through the long trials.
So it seems that Constantino's Market would fit into this theory. These guys are a family-owned growing grocery chain (total 4 stores) from Cleveland, Ohio, and this is their first store that has opened outside of northeast Ohio. Having a connection with the chosen developer of College Town, Fairmount Properties, also based in Cleveland, it makes sense as to why Constantino's would take a risk on Rochester (we are a similar city in many ways to Cleveland as well). And we're glad they have showed up.
Let's take a look at what's in store.
A seating area to relax, eat, browse the web on your laptop, do your homework, or chat with friends...
...and a relatively spacious, clean area to move around in without getting claustrophobia.
Products that you seen in every major grocery chain...
...including the goodies, especially for the students at the UofR to feed their cravings with as they work on their studies.
Constantino's offers a wide variety of restaurant-quality prepared foods, including a huge salad bar, sushi, soups, sandwiches, meats and desserts.
And how could you forget the ice cream or -
- better yet, the cold beer! Ok, so maybe even better than just a cooler full of beer...
...is the walk-in refrigerator of beer. It seems that they know how to attract the college students attention already.
Constantino's opened up earlier in April with its Grand Opening on April 16th, 2015. Want to see more and learn more about this new grocery store in our city? You'll have a great opportunity this weekend, starting Friday April 24th, at the Mt. Hope Celebration of College Town. This is a 2-day event displaying all that is new at College Town, and Constantino's will be offering FREE samples of food and drink from local and national vendors during the event. There wouldn't be a better time to stop in and see what makes Constantino's different from other stores - whether or not you'd shop it regularly - here in Rochester we are self-branded experts on grocery chains since we know what the best look like.
Jason is co-Founder and Editor of the Rochesteriat. It's exciting what Constantino's is bringing to the Rochester market - and sometimes, the locals need a little push from the outside to be reinvigorated. Check out more @theRochesteriat or Facebook.
