A cemetery is probably not the first place you think of to go for a walk... but one filled with so much beauty and history might change your mind! Mt. Hope Cemetery covers 196 acres of glacially formed land in the Highland Park Neighborhood.
This Victorian cemetery is beautiful year round.
Check out what their website has to say: "Dedicated in 1838 in Rochester NY, Mount Hope is America's first municipal Victorian cemetery. Set in a picturesque landscape shaped by retreating glaciers, the cemetery features 82 mausoleums, soaring Egyptian obelisks, winged angels of mercy, a Florentine cast-iron fountain, two stone chapels in Gothic Revival style, a Moorish gazebo, and infinitely varied tombstones marking 350,000 graves across 196 acres."
Rochester has an incredible history and a lot of that you will find here. Many of Rochester's founders have been buried here along with Susan B. Anthony and Fredrick Douglas. The Friends of Mt. Hope Cemetery offer tours every week, May through October, even themed tours for those with specific interests: Tour List.
