On Saturday, June 18th, 2016, the Rochesteriat is going to be joining forces with Shawn Dunwoody, his talented artist crew, and the Washington Square Park Neighborhood Association (WSPNA) to do a little paintin' and cleanin' in the area. This project was made substantially possible by the generosity of the Rochester Area Community Foundation NeighborGood Grant, the third to be awarded to the WSPNA in the last 4 years. Two murals will be done and at the same time a mini Clean Sweep will take place.
The two murals will each have an inspirational saying or slogan in them, bringing a positive vibe to an underutilized and traditionally dreary area that needs some love and care from residents and city neighbors, alike.
The "BE STRONGER THAN YOUR EXCUSES" mural will be painted underneath the 490 overpass, an area right across from the former Restaurant Nikko. Two huge planters made out of old pallets are also being installed by Dunwoody's crew, bringing some life and leaves to the "forgotten area".
You don't need any crazy painting or artistic skills to get involved, the artists will have most of the designs drawn out for us, and all supplies will be provided. This is the "BE STRONGER..." mural in the making.
This is the second mural to be painted on Saturday, the "BE YOURSELF..." mural will be across from the first one in the South Avenue Extension parking lot. This mural is being commissioned by the Homeowner's Association of the Capron Street Lofts, essentially a project that will wrap the parking lot with creative expression and inspiration.
Also joining in on the festivities will be the owners of a new sports bar called Sidebar (the former Sully's Pub). They aren't open for business yet, but the owners Will and Brandon will be grilling hots and hams for everyone taking part in the action on Saturday.
Even if painting is not your thang, no worries - we still need your help. The entire area around the South Avenue Extension parking lot will undergo a Mini Clean Sweep on Saturday, and helpers will be picking up garbage and debris and possibly doing a little weeding, too, on the median flower bed.
If you haven't been a part of a Clean Sweep before, it's when the City provides all tools, garbage bags, gloves, and even t-shirts for our efforts to clean up city property. You can bring your own tools and gloves, but it's not necessary.
