The New & The Moved in the City

Lucky for all of us, new businesses are starting up in the city and ones that have been around for a while have become successful enough to upgrade to larger spaces. Better yet, businesses are ditching the 'burbs for new city digs. That's the kind of movement we like to see.

Check out the city's new businesses and those who have moved:

The New:

The Vesper

The newest business in the Washington Square Park Neighborhood is The Vesper Kitchen + Bar. This "gastro pub and raw bar" opened in September in the former space that Restaurant Nikko previously occupied on the 1st floor of the Capron Lofts building.

From the food (burgers and wings to oysters and chocolate dipped bacon) to the craft cocktails, wine, and beer, you'll find something to enjoy at Vesper. We'd describe it as classic American fare in a warm, rustic setting in one of the coolest areas of downtown.

Leaf Tea Bar is the expanded endeavor of Happy Earth Tea owners Niraj and Mary, a brick and mortar retail shop and tea bar. Located at 650 South Ave, this tea bar is not only a place to sit back and enjoy tea, but also to learn about where it comes from and perfect the art of pouring a fantastic cup every time.

Niraj and Mary moved from their original spot in the The Hungerford.

Jetty at the Port

Jetty at the Port is new restaurant at the Port of Rochester. A bigger space inside than we imagined, this restaurant can easily hold your next family celebration, corporate function, or holiday party.

It also boasts an expansive outdoor section that includes tables for meals, a lounge-type area for relaxed conversation, and of course, a beautiful view of Lake Ontario where you'll see all the action happening at this newly re-designed section of our city. And yes, it's in the city.

Check out Port of Rochester for more info. You'll also want to check out the Harbor Town Belle at some point, as this beautiful riverboat runs in and out of the Port from May through October.

Cedar Mediterranean

A new Lebanese restaurant has opened up at 746 Monroe Ave, Cedar Mediterranean. We haven't been there yet ourselves, but foodies crave relatively unknown spots like this. It looks like the menu has a lot of options, including vegan and vegetarian dishes.

5 Ways to Celebrate Mother's Day Besides Brunch

the Rochesteriat

the Rochesteriat

This Sunday, May 8th, is Mother's Day! And while everyone is making brunch, lunch, or dinner reservations to take their Mom out, we thought we'd offer some other suggestions for things to do and places to shop for your Momma this year. Here are 5 ways to celebrate Mom this weekend (and every other day too):

1. A Day of Art & Culture

the Rochesteriat

Going out for coffee or food is great, but why not also go somewhere to enjoy a cultural experience together? Our city is full of amazing museums and galleries that should be taken advantage of. We have Artisan Works, the George Eastman Museum (who also has special Mother's Day events), Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo), Makers Gallery and Studio, Susan B. Anthony House and many many more.

2. Learn Something New Together

The gift of time together is exactly what Mom is looking for, so why not learn something new while you're at it?

Rochester Brainery's classes range from painting, to crochet, cooking, gardening, and even fencing. Check out their current classes and find something fun that you can do together over the next week or two.

You'll also find classes at Little Button Craft & Press ranging from faux calligraphy and screen printing to paper quilling.

3. Immerse Yourself in Flowers

the Rochesteriat

What's better than the scents and sights of the Lilac Fest? Kicking off this Friday, May 6th and going through Sunday, May 15th, there are plenty of days to enjoy the buds and blooms, food, music and all of the festival fun. Check out Art in the Park both weekends, all of the concerts, events and of course - the blooms (festival map).

Sunday also happens to be first of the Flower City Days at the Market. The Rochester Public Market will be overtaken by over 250 local nurseries and growers selling flowers, plants and all things greenery.

4. That Perfect Gift

Forget department stores, shop local this year and always. Flowers? Head to Stacy K Floral or Arena's. Something sweet? Go to Hedonist Artisan Chocolates or Stever's Candies. Accessories, Scarves or Purses? Shop at Fahsye or Peppermint. Something else unique? The city is full of unique places to shop like Abode, Little Button Craft & Press, More Fire Glass Studio, Parkleigh and Louelle Design Studio.

5. Catch a Show

the Rochesteriat

the Rochesteriat

Looking for a laid back day? Catch a flick at The Little Theatre or Dryden Theatre. Looking to take in a theatrical production? Take Mom out to one of Rochester's incredible theaters like Geva Theatre or Blackfriars Theatre.

Whether you celebrate over the weekend or on another day, we hope you get to enjoy the city with the ones you love.
