the Rochesteriat

If you haven't been to the George Eastman Museum yet, what are you waiting for? If you've never been... or haven't been in a while, here are 5 things to do at the George Eastman Museum this Summer:

1. Explore the House

the Rochesteriat

George Eastman called this Colonial Revival mansion home from 1905 to until his death in 1932. "The historic mansion and gardens at the George Eastman Museum provide a glimpse into the life of one of the greatest American innovators and entertainers in the first decades of the twentieth century. Original furnishings and artifacts, careful reproductions, and beautifully restored landscape transport visitors to George Eastman’s time" (via website).

2. Enjoy the Gardens & Grounds

Exploring the grounds is one of our favorite things to do, whether it's in Spring when the flowers are blooming or Fall while the leaves are changing. Daily tours of the gardens are offered May through September so we recommend you take full advantage of that, or to learn more about each space, check out the information online.

3. Tour the Exhibits

The latest exhibit to open is Photography and America's National Parks. It's celebrating the 100th anniversary of the formation of the National Park Service, and will be up until October 2nd. Check out the other current exhibits and what's coming up.

4. Listen to some Garden Vibes

Cool nights and rainy days happen in the summer, why not catch a flick at the Dryden Theatre? "Presenting film screenings every day of the week, the Dryden is devoted to showing all films in their original formats, thus honoring and reproducing their historical—and aesthetically supreme—modes of exhibition. It is one of the very few theaters in the world equipped for the projection of original nitrate film that also makes nitrate film screenings part of its regular program" (about Dryden).

5 Ways to Celebrate Mother's Day Besides Brunch

the Rochesteriat

the Rochesteriat

This Sunday, May 8th, is Mother's Day! And while everyone is making brunch, lunch, or dinner reservations to take their Mom out, we thought we'd offer some other suggestions for things to do and places to shop for your Momma this year. Here are 5 ways to celebrate Mom this weekend (and every other day too):

1. A Day of Art & Culture

the Rochesteriat

Going out for coffee or food is great, but why not also go somewhere to enjoy a cultural experience together? Our city is full of amazing museums and galleries that should be taken advantage of. We have Artisan Works, the George Eastman Museum (who also has special Mother's Day events), Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo), Makers Gallery and Studio, Susan B. Anthony House and many many more.

2. Learn Something New Together

The gift of time together is exactly what Mom is looking for, so why not learn something new while you're at it?

Rochester Brainery's classes range from painting, to crochet, cooking, gardening, and even fencing. Check out their current classes and find something fun that you can do together over the next week or two.

You'll also find classes at Little Button Craft & Press ranging from faux calligraphy and screen printing to paper quilling.

3. Immerse Yourself in Flowers

the Rochesteriat

What's better than the scents and sights of the Lilac Fest? Kicking off this Friday, May 6th and going through Sunday, May 15th, there are plenty of days to enjoy the buds and blooms, food, music and all of the festival fun. Check out Art in the Park both weekends, all of the concerts, events and of course - the blooms (festival map).

Sunday also happens to be first of the Flower City Days at the Market. The Rochester Public Market will be overtaken by over 250 local nurseries and growers selling flowers, plants and all things greenery.

4. That Perfect Gift

Forget department stores, shop local this year and always. Flowers? Head to Stacy K Floral or Arena's. Something sweet? Go to Hedonist Artisan Chocolates or Stever's Candies. Accessories, Scarves or Purses? Shop at Fahsye or Peppermint. Something else unique? The city is full of unique places to shop like Abode, Little Button Craft & Press, More Fire Glass Studio, Parkleigh and Louelle Design Studio.

5. Catch a Show

the Rochesteriat

the Rochesteriat

Looking for a laid back day? Catch a flick at The Little Theatre or Dryden Theatre. Looking to take in a theatrical production? Take Mom out to one of Rochester's incredible theaters like Geva Theatre or Blackfriars Theatre.

Whether you celebrate over the weekend or on another day, we hope you get to enjoy the city with the ones you love.
