Our 5th most popular post of 2017 just so happened to be our Holiday Shop Local Guide. Loaded with ideas of places to shop, we're happy this made the list, because it works all year round - Valentine's, birthdays, anniversaries - you name it! Check out the post here: 2017 Holiday Guide: Shop LOCAL!

In early 2017, the Rochester Downtown Development Corporation announced The Commissary would be coming to the basement of The Metropolitan in early 2018. We can't wait, read about it here: A Kitchen Incubator is Coming to Downtown Rochester

Nagle's Observance, a new neighborhood bar to the midtown area opened in August of 2017. We took a peek inside just before they opened, read the post here: 9 Things You'll Want to Know About Nagle's Observance

Our original list started with 10 places, but quickly expanded to 15. Rochester has a lot of great brunch places and even still, there are more than we have listed! Clearly, we love brunch since it became our most viewed post! Read our top post: 15 Places You Should Be Thinking of for Brunch

BONUS: Did You Know?

Cordaro & Hodge - Don't Miss Your Chance at the Metropolitan

the Rochesteriat

the Rochesteriat

Two things we love here in our city: local art and hi-rise (aka loft, condo, hotel-style) living. This amazing collaboration has them both on display for you to see.

Saturday night, June 18th, Gallina Development and The Metropolitan (f.k.a. Chase Tower), hosted their first pop-up art show on the 26th floor, featuring a collaboration between local artists Cordell Cordaro and Nate Hodge.

Not only did Cordaro and Hodge work on over 30 pieces together, often passing canvases back and forth to take turns working, they also took over some walls and even floors in this penthouse unit.

All of the pieces are collaborations between the artists.

And the best part? If you missed the opening reception you have THREE chances left to see the show:

  • Monday, June 20th, 2-7pm
  • Wednesday, June 22nd, 2-7pm
  • Friday, June 24th, 2-7pm

And you do NOT want to miss this show and the incredible views of our city from the 26th floor...

...if you didn't know already, the 26th floor of this space (and 25th, 24th, 23rd, and 22nd!) is being converted to condos.

You always said you wanted views of the lake, right?

ROC City Guide: Lofts to BUY in the City

the Rochesteriat | capron street lofts

the Rochesteriat | capron street lofts

Looking for a nice loft for purchase in the city to get away from that suburban responsibility? Sure, if you blink you may miss 'em. But we're HUGE advocates for this living arrangement, so we'll keep adding to this list as it grows over the years.

To be clear, our definition of "loft" here is somewhat liberal....the Capron Street Lofts are about as close as we get to a true loft you can buy in our city. To make this a list of more than one place, we're defining "loft" as a place where your living space is at least 1 floor off the ground...and views are most welcome.

Here's a list of Lofts you can BUY in our City.

1000 East Ave

the rochesteriat | 1000 East Ave

the rochesteriat | 1000 East Ave

East End
Marketed as the "Best value on East Ave.!", this is a mid-century building with condos in a doorman building in the heart of the East End, Park Ave, and NOTA neighborhoods with the affordability to prove it. Walking distance to the George Eastman Museum, the RMSC, and East Ave Wegmans - 1000 East Ave is a great place for that boutique-hotel-style living that is accessible to pretty much everything you could possibly want out of city living.

Price Range: $100,000 - $150,000

Capron Street Lofts

the rochesteriat | capron

Washington Square Park
The Capron Street Lofts, or 1 Capron - as noted by the big number 1 on the highest point of the building, was a developer's risk back in 2009-2011 after the stock market crash of '08. It seems the risk certainly paid off because the building has been at full capacity since opening. With 19 residential units and 1 commercial space (note: the former Restaurant Nikko), these lofts offer just about everything that people love about urban living: high ceilings, exposed brick and original wooden beams, open floor plans, and of course the views of the skyline, river, parks, and downtown developments happening on a daily basis. Check out this post for more pics.

Price Range: $200,000 - $750,000

The Metropolitan Rochester (Coming Soon)

Downtown - Center City
You wanna know what's exciting about downtown Rochester these days? Just take a look at The Metropolitan. What was formerly called the Chase Building (even before that the Lincoln First Tower), this iconic building located in Center City is the new wave of happenin' in our city. We say this because the developer, family owned Gallina Development, is taking Rochester to a whole different level with this one. And by whole new level, in this case we mean 20-some-odd stories up! While a good portion of the residential floors will be apartments, floors 22-26 will be offered as luxury condos. Just think: 24hr doorman and concierge, covered parking, fiber-optic internet, on-site cafe, fitness, park, incredible views...you get the point.

Price Range: TBD

Sagamore on East

East End
The Sagamore is a 23-unit luxury condominium project that was completed in 2006, really providing the initial spark to the recent wave of condo owners interested in Center City living. All units come with terraces to look out over the bustling East Avenue section near the Eastman Theatre, and the building includes everything from indoor parking, a concierge, security services, and being able to walk to some of the best things our city offers: Eastman Theatre, Java's Cafe, RoCo, Fuego, Spot Coffee, Arena's, and on and on.

Price Range: $350,000 - 900,000

Stay tuned on this project in the coming months, exciting things are taking place downtown at the former Chase Tower, and this just may be your next home (or business location, or dining spot, etc.)!

Here's What We Found Looking Through Our iPhone Pics 2015...

We take a lot of photos. It's what we do. It's a huge part of the Rochesteriat, and simply - it's what we love. Most days we carry our camera around and we always have our phones on us, no matter where we go. When we write posts, we always have a ton of media to look through. Some of the best shots make it in our posts, many others do not.

So, as we've been tweaking the new site for 2016, here's a look at some of our iPhone shots that didn't make it into the posts last year. Yes we may be a little behind doing a look back at 2015, but better late than never. And yes, we found out that we liked food - A LOT. But don't judge us because WE'RE those people always taking shots of our plates. What can we say, food on a plate at these city establishments is like art to us.

Yup, good ol' comfort food. This was a delicious smoked mozzarella pizza at Fiorella's at the Public Market infused with garlic, greens, and pecorino cheese. You just have to treat yourself to a pizza sometimes.

One of our favorite persons in Rochester - Niraj Lama of Happy Earth Tea. Niraj and his wife, Mary, started Happy Earth in 2011 and have been importing some of the world's finest teas to Rochester. You may be interested to know that they are located in the historic Hungerford Building, and you can sign up for an amazing tea class experience here, during which we captured this shot.

Listen, as healthy as we try to be, sometimes you just have to splurge a little. Have you been to Balsam Bagels lately? Maybe a vegan-chocolate-chip-cream-cheese bagel? There are so many options of bagels and flavors of cream cheese, you can change it up every time you go. Oh, and it's not all vegan for those of us who like the normal stuff.

the rochesteriat

If we want to keep eating like we do, we have to make sure to work it off as well. This picture was taken in early August last year of the mini sweep a group of us did just prior to the first-ever outdoor salon for TEDxFlourCity in the Washington Square Park. We're grateful for such committed, hard-working residents of this city keeping it beautiful.

And speaking of the Washington Square Park - did you know that there is a Dachshund Parade that happens every May? Yes, it's quite the spectacle where dachshunds (and their owners!) get all dressed up and prance around the stage and park. This coming year is the 15th anniversary happening on May 7th, 2016 - do not miss!

the rochesteriat

You've had Hart's Breakfast sandwiches, right!? Yes, they are the best. In fact, this was the first place we went after we came back from being out of the country because we simply wanted something American-Amazeballs. You can build-your-own or you can go with a popular selection, the Signature Breakfast Sandwich. So here's the plan: on May 7th, stop over to Hart's for a great breakfast, and then you can walk it off by heading to the Dachshund Parade that starts at 10am - see we know how to plan your day right!

And yet another way to be involved at the street level here in ROC...this was a street painting party in NOTA that took place in September. We're really excited how much creativity goes into beautifying this city!

the rochesteriat

We all know of Jines, The Frog Pond, and Cure, to name a few of the amazing places around the City to get brunch. But what about something different? What about the "Hangover Bowls" at Blu Wolf Bistro on Park Ave? Yes, they may look like slop on a plate, but essentially it's heaven in a bowl. Try one out and you won't be sorry...forget the hangover, I'm pretty sure this will put you into a food coma afterwards.

Finally, this shot was taken last year of an iconic building that is being transformed in downtown Rochester - The Metropolitan - formerly known as the Chase Tower. We are eagerly awaiting the work that Gallina Development is doing to convert it into mixed-use space of apartments, condos, office, and retail.
